Is your social media presence, your fan club?

Some things in life work the same as they always have, they just have been given different names or work on different platforms.

Social media is big these days in the promotion world. Why?  Lots of people who may be interested in your products and services, hang out on these sites. Lots of people.
Talking with a friend who operates a ‘life style’ site which has been going for about 10 years, stated that he uses social media as essentially his ‘fan club.’
When he has something important to say, that’s about 3 times a day, he posts to his site, which automatically posts to Google Feedburner, which posts to Twitter, posts to Facebook and the other social sites or blogs in his network and mailing list (the mailing list signup is on his site.)
The more people who know about what his site is up to, the better. This works for him and for most of you, but you have to look at your business and market to see to what extent social media sites will work for you.

So, the old fan club model. How did it work?
When I joined the Beano fan club, I did so as I read the Beano and wanted to be part of the club. If you already have a brand and people interested in you and they want to keep track of your interesting happenings, you will have an easier time, than starting from scratch.
The other pull for my Beano Fan club membership was the ‘free’ stuff I got (obviously not free as I paid for membership, but it felt like bonuses!) I got an official fan club card, a monthly newsletter, a badge and some other ‘exclusive’ bits and bobs. Membership and exclusive stuff, great!
So, with your ‘membership’, signups, give away some exclusive stuff – free exclusive information, a car sticker, drinks mat, a facebook app.,  anything you can think of.
It may work.
